13 OCT 05Semi-Weekly Update
A League of our own.......ALLIED TAG
For those who don't know yet as they are living under a rock....

A group of people who regularly meet on Thursdays on 1SLT for the general chat session have decided to finally pull together and lay some foundation to get a long time goal and dream of many to come to reality. Originally the desire was to have a national group that would work towards promoting the sport of lasertag and organize events on the national level. Emboldened by some of our overseas visitors such as Matt from the U.K., it was decided to not limit the group to a national listing but to become an international league. Developement of the group has been slow...however it has been steady! If you would like to become involved, you can either attend the Thursday nite chat sessions on www.1SLT.com, or you can register on www.AlliedTag.com to become a member and join in on the forum discussions for the league under the forum "A League of our own..".

Currently the league has elected startup officers with Adrian / Hawkwood from the Atlanta Laser Tag Club as the head chairman. This week two main issues are in discussion and will be voted on 20th of October:

I. One of the main factors being debated is to form the group under the official registration of a non-profit organization or a Limited Liability Corporation. Research on the pros and cons of these have been posted in the Allied Tag league forum for discussion.

II. A listing of submitted rules for the league have been researched and posted by Sinistrad from the Nuclear Dawn club. Each of these rules is open for discussion and will be voted in by a simple majoiety voting on the 20th of October.

Note: To vote you must be registered on www.AlliedTag.com. You can either vote by posting, or at the meeting on Thursday nite, 20th of October.
Tripple T Tournaments - Taggin for Toys for Tots
Although this started as a sugguestion with a KAG group and the Atlanta Laser Tag group, the project has been adopted by the Allied Tag League. So far 4 seperate clubs have volunteered to throw a tournament in their local area. The idea is to throw a Lazer Tag tournament in your area in conjunction with the U.S. Marine's Toys for Tots program. Although the format of the torunament is open to those who are organiziing it - so far the sugguestion is to throw a 4 person team blizt double elimination rounds game, using hosting to track scores with LTTO equipment. This also gives the possibility in the case that there is a large turn out in teams, you can do 3 team games.

If you are interested in getting involved, you do not HAVE to be an Allied Tag League member - although there are benefits to being a member, such as the ability to get gear for the torunment from 1SLT and only pay the cost of shipping the gear (no rental fee).
The following is a letter from Adrian with sugguestions on how to go about getting started:

Well, since November is nearly here and Christamas is just around the corner, I've had several folks ask me how to host a Toys for Tots Laser Tag Tournament and actually have people show up. Okay, I think I can accomodate you folks. Let's look at this, step by step, and see what we can come up with.

Step one: Contact the local Toys for Tots representative. (Easier said that done. These guys are busy. Call and email them until they realise that you're not some kook that'll just evaporate after one or two trys. Let them know you care by instilling in them an understanding that you will continue to try and contact them until they respond. Once they realise you're serious, they'll get back to you. Once they know that the voicemail light will be on every morning, as well as after their lunchbreaks, they'll call you back, if for nothing other than just your guarantee that, if they agree to work with you, you'll leave them alone.)

Step two: Set a date for the tournament. (People don't know when to show up unless you tell them when to show up.)

Step three: Who do you know? (Most people operate under the mistaken impression that they do not know anyone who would be interested in playing laser tag, much less to cough up money to play for charity. You'd be surprised. Talk about the tournament, long and loud. You'll be surprised at the number of folks who you assumed would not be interested will come out for a charity. And it's not just who you know, but who they know. A good target for this would be police officers you see at the convenience store when you stop for gas. Also, who is your insurance agent? Who do you know in a college or university? Who do you know who is a doctor? Who do you know who is a lawyer? Who do you know that is related to you? Who do you know in the grocery store where you shop? In any store where you shop for that matter. Who collects your garbage? Who delivers your mail? Who do you know in management in local businesses? Who do you know in ROTC/the local military? The list can go on and on.)

Step four: What local restaurants do you know who would be willing to exchange free meals for the chance to get their name associated with a charity tournament? (That's a source for prize right there. The same can go for other local businesses, as well.)

Step five: Follow up. (Make sure you have contact info for anyone who expresses an interest. Things like this are easy to forget. Get all interested parties to commit to showing up BEFORE the date of the tournament. Otherwise, you'll be listening to the crickets chirp on game day)

Step six: Overinvite to the tournament. ( The law of averages in a situation like this is 20% of the total number you invited will show up. If you want 20, invite 100. It's a simple matter of numbers.)

Step seven: Make it fun. (Be onsite early enough to have your panic attack before the attendees show up. Problems are going to happen. Be flexible. After that, it's all downhill.)

Step eight: Be sure of who, in your club, will be available as referees and such. (Don't wait 'till the last moment to find out who in your club will be there to help out.)

Step nine: Make sure the money goes where it's supposed to go. (It's for the kids, not buying new gear for the club.)

Step ten: Mistakes will happen. It's okay. Learn from them and make next year better. That's what the learning process is all about.

Step eleven: Finally, make sure you don't overcomplicate things. (Keep it simple, and don't get worked up over the no-shows. It'll happen. Focus all of your energies on the ones who do show. They're the ones who deserve it.)

Well, that's about all I have for this point. If you need me (hawkwood), email me and we'll get to the bottom of your boggle quick enough that your tournament goes off as smoothly as possible.

Gonna coordinate with a local Corn Maze to let our club use their maze in the evening for the game, but not have exclusive access. Costumes a plus, but remember how much running around we'll be doing. The most likely maze will be Land of Oz corn maze in/near Ottawa. Note there may be a small fee for entry to this game to cover costs of maze entry.
